Handcrafted boats by Dorset's Boat Building Academy

Friday 20 December 2013

Handcrafted boats constructed by Dorset’s Boat Building Academy are launched into the English Channel.

Traditional artisan construction methods and wood inlay techniques are used to introduce exquisite detailing and pattern. Paddles are made with a combination of wood varieties, including Sitka Spruce, Yellow Cedar, Mahogany, Black Walnut and Douglas Fir.

A series of canoes made from red and yellow cedar are constructed from the traditional method - Strip Planking.

A ribbed interior of a canoe is made with Sitka Spruce, a Pine which has very good bending properties.

Pelusa is constructed using an ancient design from 1870 called Arkansaw Traveler.
